Education, Teaching Bursaries (Funza Lushaka 2011)
Do you feel you have a calling for teaching? Do you want to mould leaders of tomorrow?
Do you have a desire to make a difference in the lives of others, but don't have the funds or bursary required for completing a Teachers Diploma or Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) degree at a South African university?
The government of South Africa, particularly the national Departments of Education (Higher education and Training and Basic education), has noticed the need to develop good teachers in all subjects. The application process for the Fundza Lushaka teaching bursary is open. The application process runs from 1st October 2010 to 28th January 2011.
The MINIMUM qualifying criteria is simple:
*You should be interested in teaching
*You should obtain an average mark of 60 % (Level 4) if you are a new entrant into university study OR an average mark of 55 % over all modules if you are already in university.
(These are just minimum requirements, for more specific requirements visit Fundza Lushaka on http://www.funzalushaka.doe.gov.za
)
The application process is ONLINE, and the 2011 Application Form is available from 1st October 2010)

ReplyDeletei am currently doing teaching i am a first year at university of Johannesburg and i dont have a bursary please help 0719131886/0735009952
DeleteThe people working for fundza going around schools presenting students with info of this bursaries should ensure that they give correct info because i applied for the bursaries with very good marks but the lady of the DOB did not tell us that we must print out the the application form and sent it to NIHE campus with our other info and it sucks bigtime!
ReplyDeletewhen are the bursaries coming out?the waiting is killing me sofly
ReplyDeleteIt was said that unsuccessful candidates will receive an sms from the education department either on 28 Feb or 1st March. Those that do not receive an sms will be considered and will be notified the second week of March (hope you dont get an sms)...
ReplyDeleteDen 2013 results when r we goin 2 get dem were stil waitn n its killin us
DeleteI'm still willing to do it but,i think i'm late. I have applied for a Bursary but did not register early so they told me that it's closed .can I still go and register. now ? when does the classes starts ?
ReplyDeletei'm still waitting for fundza to reply me,it will be great pleasure for me if fundza takes me because at home there is no one working.i wish my dreams could come true.
ReplyDeletei applied for FUNDZA ON November 2010, i did not get any respond from them . i don't even know if my application was processed. from Sindy 0768303059
ReplyDeleteThank you all for your comments:
ReplyDeleteHere is some advice:
1. You should follow the application process as stipulated by the Department of Education. Their requirement was that the applications be submitted online. If you did not submit through their website, that maybe the reason you did not get feedback from them.
2. Always look at the requirements (marks and subjects) and include ALL required documents when you apply.
Unfortunately the 2011 application process was closed on 28 Jan 2011. The best thing to do will be to apply for next year's intake. I will notify everyone about the application process when it opens. Goodluck.
i dnt realy like the way they market the bursury they dnt tell us that they will not pay the registration fee, and the date which the results are going to come out.
ReplyDeleteWhen will the students know if their application is successful or not. I tried phoning and emailing the NMMU Funza Lushaka department and "nobody home" Do they realise how we feel - we are having sleepless nights down here!!!
ReplyDeleteWhy can't the department just sms the students and let them know - it is as simple as that! They said that we will know by end of Feb - it is now 16 March 2011 - all we want to know is: YES or NO!!
ReplyDeleteI have been trying for the last month to access the website and it gives me an error message - can somebody please check it out!!!
ReplyDeletei applied for funzalushaka and i never got any respond some of my friend has successful but we are on a same level and we applied simultaniously
ReplyDeleteIt differs from institution to institution. The department has given the list of successful candidates as well as those that were not, to each institution, where the administrator will split the groups. Some institutions work faster than others, depending on staff availability, I think. So depending on where you are studying, you will be notified sooner or later. Hang in there future teachers!!!!
ReplyDeleteI would like to say this if you applied for Funza bursary don't worry and don't lose hope ok just be patience its just the matter of time, this may take a while its just that there are too many applicants, you will recieve an sms just like they stated. i know these people they dont keep empty promises it will happen as they said just for them. God bless thee
ReplyDeleteI am studying at the NMMU in PE and really need the bursary. I am doing the Foundation Phase and if I don't get the bursary then I won't be able to complete my studies and fulfill my Dream. I really want to be a teacher but I do believe what must be must be but I am ancious and need to know so that if I don't get the bursary then I can go Overseas and save up and do it later - but I need to know!!!!! Please hurry up so that we can get on with our lives!! Thanks
ReplyDeleteI can not afford to pay for my studies on my own and therefore applied for a bursary. My average percentage was 75% and I offered 8 subjects including Maths. I want to become a foundation phase teacher and was given the impression that almost everyone gets this bursary and that usually you can choose if you want it or not.
ReplyDeleteWell ... I didn't get the bursary as the cut off percentage Funza Lushaka considered was 77%. I am just wondering... If I chose Maths literacy instead of Maths.... would I have received this bursary???? My marks would have been much better! I really feel this is unfair, because I am now in compromising position of deciding to terminate my studies after the first term, as I can simply not afford it! I would have appreciated it if we could have known if we were one of the "chosen few" (10 out of 130 students) before we paid our registration, books, classfees and accommodation. I have also spend an indecent amount on making apparatus... would really liked to have known that my 75% was not good enough before CPUT took my money which adds up to the amount of R15 000 after the first term. I could have used this money to go work overseas. South Africa's government really says one thing and promises a lot, but in the end we are left in the lurch with empty hands. I thought Foundation Phase and Maths teachers were priority in this country. Surely my marks and commitment to teaching seems not to have been enough to get financial help.
Funza Lushaka SUCKS BIG TIME!
ReplyDeleteRumours have it that mostly the English Speaking students received bursaries and that the cut off was almost 80%. Some schools load their June and September marks and although I can not prove this... it is general knowledge. Go look at the average year mark of a student! Not only the September and June marks. Some of my friends who got way less than me in December, without the distinctions I got... received a bursary and I didn't. Just because their June/ September mark was better than mine. Needless to say I am frustrated and angry as some of these students don't even want to be a teacher... they are using the money to buy cars and clothes while the rich parents provide anyway.
I would realy like to know if all the "race" groups are going to be considered? My final average was 76% and my Grade 11 and Grade 12 marks for every exam were about the same so surely they should look into that as well. How do some of the people know that they were unsuccessful - NMMU in PE has not let us know!!!! Why are we always the LAST TO KNOW - IS PE SO FAR BEHIND WITH EVERYTHING THEY DO?
ReplyDeletei am a student @UL, first year , doing BED SENIOR PHASE FET MAJORING IN LAGUAGES. The funza allocated bursary holder's list is out but my name was not there.i went to enquire, i was told my points were low..but someone whose points are lower, also in my class got the bursary.i want to ask the funza people about the criteria they use to select the qualifying applicants. chancaes are very high that i may drop out, again due to financial exclusivity.ill be happy to hear from you. good day
ReplyDeleteTo the above person - where are you studying? Where can we get the "Funza allocated bursary holders list" from? I am first year at NMMU in PE and we have not got the list!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteMany thanks
HEY
ReplyDeleteIM ALSO WAITING, HAVE YOU FORGOTEN ABOUT US OR SOMETHING, SO CAN U PLIZ INFORM US SO THAT WE CAN START LOOKING FOR MONEY COZ I HAVE TO PAY MA FEES NOW IN UNISA, SO I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO. PLEASE WE ARE STRESSED COZ WE DONT HAVE MONEY TO STUDY.
YOU PROMICED US THAT WE'LL GET THE BURSARY IN TIME.
SO WHO EVER IS INCHARGE CAN U PLIZ TELL US AND TAKE US COZ WE WANT TO STUDY... EN TEACH THOSE LEARNERS.
CONCERNED TEACHER OF SOUTH AFRICA
THANKS
Dear friends
ReplyDeleteI just phoned the PE NMMU and they told me that we will only know in a months time!!!!!!! I think it is ridiculous and a joke. I can't understand why NMMU is so slack and behind time as the other Universities have sent their sms already.
i am still waiting for an sms to find out whether it is successful or not?
ReplyDeletepls reply.
How can I check on the website to see if my application was successful or not? Can't I key in my student number and ID number and then check like that or maybe send an sms to check - like we checked to see if we passed our Matric - maybe you can suggest it as an Innovation for future use if not possible at the moment!!! Please let us know asap - the wait is killing us!!!
ReplyDeleteI am desperately in need of the bursary as I honestly cannot afford to pay my university fees. I beg you please, whoever is in charge, to please speed up the process. It is working on my nerves because I don't know what to expect. I called pretoria on numerous occasions and the lady called Naomi first promised me that we would receive a sms in the middle of Feb but nothing materialised. than she promised me again that i would receive a sms in the middle of march but I am still waiting and it is killing me. i think that they are only making provision for a "certain" race. I cannot afford to make a loan and my passion is to teach. It doesnt matter if I earn a little money, as long as i can sow my life into the lives of our children.
ReplyDeletewhy are you keeping us this long because you said we all going to get the bursary and we are very passionate about teaching. please we realy need the bursary because of fanancial constrains and the passion we have
ReplyDeletecan some one have mercy and tell us when are the bursaries coming out
ReplyDeleteWell, I feel for all of you!!
ReplyDeleteI am a student at CPUT and in our class only 10 out of 300 received the bursary. The cut off was 77%, but we only heard that now! My June marks were 75% and my December marks were 79% with Maths and an 8th subject. I received 4 distinctions 2 in school subject and 2 for extra subjects offered. I didn't get the bursary! My friend who had higher June marks, but much lower December marks received the bursary. I am glad for her, because she needs the money,,, but so do I! I just feel that there is a snake in the grass somewhere and I definitely smell a rat - BIG TIME! So I guess it is either a drop-out for me or an indecent student loan which I will struggle to pay back on the salary a teacher gets. I guess the fact that teaching is my absolute passion doesn't make a difference. I wish they interviewed us all and took all our marks since gr 11 into consideration. I agree that we were left in the lurch here and that I have lost all trust in Funza Lushaka. At least now I can apply for Governing body posts and work overseas - that is about the only upside. Where are the good old days when teachers were subsidised in their studies and every teaching student received a bursary. The government doesn't make teaching an attractive career of choice anymore. And they promised that scarce skills like Foundation Phase and Maths and Science teachers would be "looked after", I am a foundation phase student and I had Maths as major subject ... so please explain to me on this forum why an A average in gr 11 and a 75% June mark and a 79% December mark didn't get me the bursary, but my friend who had Maths literacy (which pushed up her average in June) and whose marks were lower than mine in December, received the Funza Lushaka bursary. She doesn't even want to be a teacher and is not planning on paying it back anyway.
Well , you are so lucky to at least know because down here in PE we still haven't heard!!! Unbelievable. Well, if I don't get it then I will be joining you because my average was 76% in December with 3 Distinctions - I am very passionate but if I don't get the bursary then I am going to have to go overseas to save up for my studies. We were also promised that we would get the bursary but with the Orientation they sang a different song!! Maybe you should contact Mr Zuma and ask what are they going to do about the situation as they need passionate and dedicated teachers in SA and he knows it. Or maybe even better why not contact Helen Zille from the DA and ask her to look into the "promises" made!!!!! because that is what I am going to do if mine is declined! Maybe it will be a good story for "Carte Blanche" - contact them and maybe you will become FAMOUS - GOOD LUCK!!!!
ReplyDeleteGuys I dont work for the Department of Education. But like any bursary institution they have some criteria last year they offered a vey limited number of bursaries and I think that is the reason why most deserving students did not get these bursaries, lets wait for next year's intake.
ReplyDeleteIn the mean time, I encourage you to go to the Financial Aid Office on your campus to get an NSFAS application form.
Oh well I got my reply this afternoon. Apparently my application was not successful, because I did not send through my matric certificate.I applied online and knew nothing about to send other documents. after such a long wait. I am disappointed. It was hard paying my registration fee, I wonder how I will pay the rest of the fees
ReplyDeleteTo the last Anon, please visit the financial aid office at your institution and seek information about NSFAS. I am sure you will be helped.

ReplyDeleteApplications will only open in October this year for 2013. So you should check then.the earlier you apply, the better.
Hi.. how much do u guys give the student after the tuition are paid?
ReplyDeleteif you get the bursary, can you fill in a form to say you want all the money to be paid into your savings account and then you will pay the money by yourself?
ReplyDeleteIN FACT THE FUNZA BURSARY PROCEDURE IS VERY PAINFUL, WHY DONT THEY SEND SMS TO THE APPLICANTS AND TELL THEM IF TEHY HAVE APPROVED OR NOT. PEOPLE JUST FIND OUT THERE AND THEY EVEN FAINT IF THEIR NAMES DOES NOT APPEAR IN THE LIST, I THINK THEY DONT REALISE THAT WE ARE APPLYING BECAUSE WE NEED ASSISTANT THEREFORE WE DEPEND ON THEM FURTHERMORE WE APPLY BECAUSE WE CANN'T AFFORD TO PAY TUITION FEES.BT IT SEEMS AS IF THEY THINK WE APPLY FOR GOOD AND NICE.
