The Nedbank Bursary Scheme

Fields to be considered for the bursary are: "Business Science and Commerce with a particular emphasis on subjects like Accounting Sciences, Statistics, Economics, Finance and Financial management, Actuarial Science, Information Systems or Informatics, and Computer Science. In fact, majoring in at least one of these subjects is a pre-requisite to be considered for funding under the Nedbank Bursary Programme."

Key Information on the Nedbank Bursary Scheme

The annual bursary allocation will be spilt as follows:
1st year students: 25%
2nd year students: 50%
3rd or 4th year students: 25%
These are merit bursaries, not loans. The financial contribution must be ‘worked back’ through an equal period of employment on graduation. Nedbank has first right of refusal on the graduate on completion of their studies.
Recipients of bursaries will have the opportunity to obtain vocational work within the group during their studies. On completion of their studies, graduates will have the opportunity to apply to become a part of Nedbank’s Graduate Development Programme or to take up employment within the group.
Depending on each applicant, bursaries under the scheme can cover: • Basic costs of study, including tuition; and/or • Prescribed books; and/or • Partial or full residence as applicable.
Each bursary is for one year only, but is renewable for up to three years on demonstration of adequate achievement. While the choice of tertiary institutions does not impact on a student’s eligibility for a bursary, it is envisaged that students of the following tertiary institutions will be the primary beneficiaries:

University of CAPE TOWN
University of FORT HARE
University of JOHANNESBURG
University of KWAZULU NATAL
University of LIMPOPO (Turfloop)
NELSON MANDELA Metropolitan University
NORTH-WEST University
University of PRETORIA
RHODES University
University of SOUTH AFRICA
STELLENBOSCH University
University of VENDA
WALTER SISULU University

To be eligible to apply, applicants must: • be citizens of South Africa; • be following the required courses of study; • be deemed to have the potential to succeed in their studies; • meet the institution’s entry requirements. • Nedbank has recently partnered with ABASA to fund the Nkuhlu Subvention Fund which assists previously disadvantaged universities to attain SAICA accreditation for the training of accounting Sciences students. • The University of Fort Hare launched a Nedbank Chair in Economics in 2007. • Nedbank retail is a signatory to the Fundisa fund. The Fundisa Fund is a three-year pilot fund launched in 2007. The fund offers financial assistance to academically deserving students, while rewarding parents for saving towards their children's education - savers will receive up to a quarter of what they save each year as a bonus.
